The story of Brilliant is a legacy of family, resilience, and exceptional food. In the 1950s, Bishen Dass Anand, known as the King of Chefs, opened a modest restaurant in Nairobi, blending Punjabi tradition with East African influences. He named it “Brilliant,” believing food should always be just that.
In the 1970s, political unrest forced the Anand family to leave Kenya. Bishen Dass passed away before they left, but his legacy lived on. In 1975, his son, Gulu Anand, moved to London and opened Brilliant Restaurant in Southall, starting with a 36-seater. The family worked together to rebuild their dream, and Brilliant flourished, expanding into a 250-seat restaurant, a banqueting suite, and a successful catering operation. It became a household name in the UK and beyond.
Gulu’s children, Dipna and Shanker, grew up immersed in the hospitality world. Dipna pursued a culinary career, learning from her father, while Shanker managed the business side of things.
In 2025, Brilliant marks its 50th year in Southall. With Gulu retiring, Dipna and Shanker are opening a gastropub at Parkside Yards, Southall, continuing the family legacy. The gastropub, alongside a new cookery school, represents the evolution of Brilliant, blending casual dining with the flavours and values that have defined the Anand family for decades. The flame lit by Bishen Dass Anand continues to burn brightly, as Dipna and Shanker honour his vision.
